The Whalers mural

This mural, depicting a whaling crew at sea, was painted by Paul Curtis at The Jawbone Tavern in Bootle, Liverpool, in January 2025.

Bootle’s Jawbone Tavern, found on Litherland Road, originally opened in 1802 and was named after the whaling fleets based at Bootle Docks. Since its inception, it has served thousands of people in Bootle for well over 200 years.

The mural was particularly difficult the pant due to the many different surfaces and all the doorways and windows. It was also bitterly cold, and it often meant paint had failed to dry overnight and brushes had to be broken free from frozen buckets!

During Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939, the pub was run by Jock McNab - a Red midfielder who helped bring home the title in 1922 and 1923. Following his success on the pitch, Jock hung up his boots and retired to work in the pub for over two decades.

The pub, which is also reportedly haunted, was popular back then with Liverpool and Everton players, who would come in to see Jock, including legendary Everton forward Dixie Dean.

There are now 2 murals in the beer garden at The Jawbone, this one and The Kissing Whales, which was added a few months later (in much better weather!)

The Kissing Whales mural

These 2 whales are the latest addition to the expanding beer garden at @thejawbonebootle. This is my second mural in their award-winning beer garden.  This new addition makes for a very calming view when you're basking in the sun.

Toucan make a dream come true mural

The Abbey Road on Harrington Street is soon to be known as The Harp Public House. Paul painted these two murals in prep for the relaunch. As you may notice, one of Paul's older murals was here before; see the Beatles Murals page to see if you can work out which one it was.

HMS Birkenhead mural

HMS Birkenhead, also referred to as HM Troopship Birkenhead or Steam Frigate Birkenhead was one of the first iron-hulled ships built for the Royal Navy. She was designed as a steam frigate but was converted to a troopship before being commissioned. She was wrecked on 26 February 1852, while transporting troops to Algoa Bay at Danger Point near Gansbaai, 87 miles (140 kilometres) from Cape Town in the Cape Colony.

There were not enough serviceable lifeboats for all the passengers, and the soldiers famously stood firm on board, thereby allowing the women and children to board the boats safely and escape the sinking. Only 193 of the estimated 643 people on board survived, and the soldiers' chivalry gave rise to the unofficial "women and children first" protocol when abandoning ship, while the "Birkenhead drill" of Rudyard Kipling's poem came to describe courage in face of hopeless circumstances.

This mural was painted in appalling weather conditions in January 2020 by Liverpool artist, Paul Curtis. It is located on the side of Gallagher's Traditional Pub, located in Birkenhead, overlooking the River Mersey.

Street Fighter mural

A mural paying tribute to the classic arcade game Street Fighter 2. Painted by Paul Curtis at Arcains (Cains Brewery, Baltic Triangle, Liverpool). The fighter is in the attacking Hadouken pose, with a blue fireball shooting out towards an unseen fighter (allowing you to be part of the picture). The background is parodied; the quayside has been altered to include the famous "Ferry across the Mersey" ferry, the Royal Iris.

Gina Lollobrigida Mural

This is Italian film star Gina Lollobrigida.  She was at her height during the golden age of Italian cinema in the 1950s.

"Gina was so glamorous and beautiful, she was a joy to paint.  I did this commission for Italian Club Restaurant on Bold Street Liverpool (on the nightshift due to the restaurant opening hours!)."

Jurgen Klopp mural

The Jurgen Klopp mural painted at Jurgen's Bierhaus in Liverpool. Jurgen is captured doing his now famous 6 finger celebration, one for each of Liverpool FC's Champions League trophies. Jurgen was seen making this pose, albeit a little worse for wear, on the back of Liverpool's celebration home coming bus tour following their victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the final in Madrid in 2019. Lets talk about six baby. The mural is in Jurgen's Bar, located on the Strand in Liverpool.

The KOP mural

A poignant piece that captures the solidarity of the Liverpool supporters.  The fans on the Kop often take part in these mosaic tributes on the anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy (15th April), remembering the 96 who tragically never came home from the FA cup semi final tie between Liverpool FC and Nottingham Forrest in 1989 (this was painted before Andrew Devine sadly succumbed to injuries and became the 97th victim).

This mural is located at Jurgen's Bierhaus on The Strand in Liverpool.

Liverpool Legends mural

This mural depicts Liverpool legends, Bill Shankly and Kenny Dalglish amidst a backdrop of famous red and white Kop flags. The mural is part of a larger painting , called "The Derby" which sees LFC facing EFC.

Unfortunately, quite a bit of the footage disappeared, so there are a few jumps in the time sequence.

Bill Shankly is responsible for launching Liverpool FC from an average regional football team into the most successful team in English history. He can rightly be regarded as one of the best managers in the world. Kenny Dalglish is widely regarded by many people as LFC's greatest player, and is affectionally known as King Kenny.

Everton Legends mural

A time lapse of the EFC mural at Bierkeller in Liverpool by Liverpool street artist, Paul Curtis. This mural depicts Everton legends, Howard Kendall and William "Dixie" Dean amidst a backdrop of famous blue and white Goodison flags.

The mural is part of a larger painting , called "The Derby" which sees EFC facing LFC. Howard Kendall is the most successful manager in Everton's history. He was also the club captain during his playing days. William Ralph 'Dixie' Dean was also an Everton captain and to this day is still considered one of the greatest goal-scorers ever to play the game.
